Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area was occupied by the Attawandaron, who were an Iroquoian-speaking people. Other groups who occupied the land included the Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee. By the 1800s, the Mississauga people had moved into the territory.  The Hurons were also drawn to the area thanks to the beauty of the landscape, as well as to hunt, fish and live in the area.
